Year 6 launched their new big question – Is war ever just? – with an exciting immersion day.
We started by listening to Neville Chamberlain’s declaration of war from 3rd September 1939 before splitting off into groups to take part in activities to teach us more about World War II. We created blackout poems, artwork inspired by the Blitz and researched memorials from the National War Arboretum.
In the afternoon, we welcomed a visitor from West End in Schools who led us in poetry workshops where we discussed the use of propaganda through posters and poems that made war seem exciting in order to get men to sign up to fight. We thought about using our voices and actions to perform poetry and we are now looking forward to creating and performing our own war-time poems.
