Snippets of News - Summer Term 2012
Mrs D receives hand crafted cards and good luck messages.
20 July 2012
On Friday 20th July we bid goodbye and good luck to Mrs Duquette, who joined the Abbey six years ago as an NQT called Miss Street.
She has worked in Key Stage 1 and 2 and will be missed by pupils and colleagues alike.
Mrs Duquette has left the Abbey to join a school much closer to where she lives. Whilst we know Mrs Duquette will miss all of the children and staff at the Abbey, we're sure she won't miss the hour's journey each way.
Please keep Mrs Duquette in your prayers.
Mrs E admires one of the many beautiful good luck cards presented on her last day.
20 July 2012
Mrs Evans left us on Friday 20th July 2012 to start her maternity leave.
When we return to school in September, after the Summer holiday, we look forward to sharing the exciting news of her new arrival.
Mrs Evans says she can't imagine not coming to the Abbey every day, although we're sure she'll have plenty to keep her busy!
Children present Good Luck cards to Miss McT and Mr McT.
20 July 2012
On Friday 20th July 2012 we had a special assembly for two staff members who are getting married in the Summer holidays (not to each other!).
Each class presented beautifully crafted cards with personal messages to Mr McTernan and Miss McTiernan. Both members of staff were touched by the time and effort that had clearly gone into the preparation of the cards and by the inventive and original designs.
We say 'goodbye' to Miss McTiernan who, when she returns to school in September, will be called Mrs Morgan. We wish both teachers every happiness for both their wedding days and married life.
Playing a game of Petanque.
20 July 2012
As part of the cultural opportunities offered to pupils, many Key Stage 2 pupils got the chance to experience the popular french game of Petanque.
They discovered that it takes skill, precision and accuracy. Great fun was had by all!
In the foyer of the cinema.
20 July 2012
Congratulations to Eve from Year 5 who won the competition for the best 'Amazing Spider-Man' review following our Cinema trip last week:
"This film was amazing! It was action packed, gripping and really cool! I thought that it was very realistic compared to the first Spider-man. It was a little bit scary, but not that scary really.
I thought actors like Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone played their characters really well.
In the film there was a huge giant lizard running around the city of New York (who was actually a scientist who got changed by accident into a giant lizard) but Spider-man was trying to stop him from his horrid plan: turning everyone into lizards without weaknesses. Fortunately, Spider-man was there to save the day.
I would highly recommend this film to anyone. It's full of twists, turns and its just an awwesome film. It's a must see!"
Enjoy the Cinema vouchers Eve!
Really enjoying yummy pizza.
19 July 2012
Congratulations to class 4EH who were the best attending class in Summer 2 2012.
They really enjoyed their pizza party and celebrating their well earned success.
Will your class win the pizza party for Autumn 1 2012? All you have to do is be in school every day!

Holding the Olympic Torch.
1 July 2012
The Olympic torch has 8000 holes in it to represent all of the torch bearers. There is only one flame that is lit from the start of the relay it then gets passed on until it arrives at the city where the games will be held.
One of our pupils was lucky enough to get the opportunity to hold one of the torches. Here she is with Joe Salmon the proud torch bearer.
The choir's concert.
29 June 2012
The Abbey Gospel Choir performed songs of faith and inspirational pop songs to parents and parishioners for their end of year concert.
The children opened the concert by showing the skills necessary for singing in a choir. Such skills involve holding a harmony, delivering correct pitch and dynamics to a song and were all well received by the audience.
All choir members are responsible for playing their part and in doing so with enthusiasm the many talents of all the children were evident. Many soloists had the opportunity to sing songs of their choice.
Well done children!
The prayer service.
29 June 2012
We prepared our own Year group prayer service to celebrate the feast of St Peter and St Paul.
We invited our family members and parishoners as part of RE Week, which had a Parish focus.
We throughly enjoyed the challenge of writing prayers, recording readings, planning a format, etc, and the presentation and found, thorough our evaluation, that next time we would need to use the microphones!
29 June 2012
Reception WF acted out the Rainbow Fish story at their class assembly to remind us of the importance of sharing with our friends.
They have enjoyed sharing their first year at the Abbey School with their friends and Year 5 buddies!
Year 3's finished village.
28 June 2012
On the 28th June Year 3 had a fantastic opportunity to design and build their own Olympic village... completely out of Lego!
They thought really carefully about what would need to be included. There were so many great ideas!
After just one hour they had built the Olympic village for all the athletes and their families. The lucky athletes had lots to chose from - mansions with swimming pools or bungalows with beautiful gardens. Then they began to build all the sports facilities. There were rivers for canoeing, cycle tracks, football stadiums and even doughnut shops for all those hungry spectators!
The children worked really well together creating a truly amazing build that we are sure the real athletes of Team GB would have been honoured to see. Well done Year 3!
Children welcoming our Olympic torch.
26/27 June 2012
The Kingsbury partnership held an Olympic Torch competition for all the local schools.
The winning torch took part in its very own 'Torch Relay'. Children were selected by their classes to hold the torch.
Osborne brought the torch to us on Tuesday 26th June, and we passed it on to St Edmund Campion Secondary school the following day.
We were very proud to be a part of something closely linked to the Olympics. We look forward to supporting the Great British Olympic Team.
The picture show children from St Edmund Campion welcoming the torch. Each school is to pass on a torch to the next school for display. Our winner was Eve whose Olympic torch is now on display at St Edmund campion School.

A fabulous, hard fought football match took place at lunchtime on Friday 15th June.
Both teams took to the pitch and worked hard! Only a single goal was scored - fortunately for the staff team it was scored by them!
We are sure that Year 6 will be ready for a rematch very soon.
Year 6 assembly.
1 June 2012
To celebrate the Queen's Jubilee, Y6B performed a fabulous class assembly that was declared open by 'Queen Elizabeth III'.
A very informative assembly, that recognised that 'real friends are like diamonds - rare and precious'.
Well done to all involved.

Afterwards our visitors joined their children on the playground and had great fun joining in the many activities. One mommy had a super time feeding the chickens!
Look at all the resources purchased!
18 May 2012
A Year 6 representative for our school rangers had a meeting with our Headteacher and school Business Manager to negotiate a budget to purchase resources.
After a well prepared argument was presented, the rangers were awarded a £100 budget. Strong negotiation ensured that a separate budget was allocated for hot chocolate!
The rangers were accompanied by Chris, our wonderful senior dinner supervisor and Mr Kirke as they visited a garden centre for supplies; they even negotiated a 20% discount!
We are very proud of our young entrepreneurs. Planting will start next week and we look forward to some tasty treats.
The triumphant finalists.
9 May 2012
The boys football team gave a great display of skill at the Y4/5 football tournament, at Benson School, Lozells, as they progressed through to the finals undefeated.
They won two matches and drew one.
Their attitude to the games was fantastic too, they persevered and triumphed.
Well done boys! Good luck in the final.
Families and children together.

It was lovely to see the children enjoying lunch with some of their families on Friday. We are not sure who was more excited - the children or parents!

27 April 2012
On Friday 27th April Y1McT showcased their class assembly.
The assembly was based on the story of St. George. We re-enacted the the legend of St. George and the Dragon through song and then our talented actors shared the true story of St. George.
"Very enjoyable. It was very informative to learn the story of St. George. Lovely costumes, reading and acting also very funny at times." - Year 1 parent.
We then explored how St. George is the patron Saint of England and all of the things that made England famous, such as football, strawberries and cream and Maypole dancing. To finish our Assembly we sang a song that celebrated the multicultural side of England today: Aloha, Dzien dobry and Konnichiwa!
"What a multi-lingual class!" - Year 1 parent.
